Pool heater repair or replacement

Wenwere told our pool heater was the best top of the line heater 20 years ago.  But after a few $800 gas bills last year ( our first year) i struggle to think that the newer heaters would nit be a lot more efficient.  So i am looking to either fix the one I have or explore installing a new heater.
